Pacific Visitors·Artists丨FLOX: Use brushes to reproduce those mysterious and magnificent natural creatures that are on the verge of disappearing

FLOX

Her real name is Hayley Elizabeth. She was born in Kaitaia, New Zealand (in Maori) in 1979. She holds a bachelor’s degree in design. She founded FLOX Studio in 2003 and is active in the local art world under the name FLOX. She is currently one of the most recognized contemporary artists in New Zealand. She currently lives in Auckland, New Zealand.

As a stencil spray painting artist, FLOX’s creations are deeply rooted in street art in the early 2000s, and her iconic style derived from the natural world is undoubtedly recognized by people today. She has always adhered to the concept of “creating art for the people” and making art approachable, leaving many iconic marks on the urban landscape of downtown Auckland for more than 20 years.

FLOX’s signature native birds, ferns and flowers are a celebration of the New Zealand environment. Her use of distinctly vibrant and confident colours, combined with exquisite proportions, magically transforms grey walls into vibrant depictions of the natural world.

FLOX quickly expanded her artistic practice from street spray painting to murals, prints, publications, graphic design, and art activities such as live painting, projects and workshops for schools and the general public. She participates in numerous collaborations, charity work, and group and solo exhibitions, using site-specific murals to express local narratives and reflect on environmental issues in the area. FLOX’s accessible narratives have broadened her appeal, and as her work continues to gain global recognition, she has left her footprints around the world, including the United States, Germany, China, Singapore, India, and other places. Her works of endangered or rare native plants and animals around the world show her deep connection to the land and culture. FLOX will continue to spread her wings and make her presence felt in public spaces and homes around the world.
